Discovering charming wineries near Jávea

There’s so much more to the area surrounding Javea than the shining blue sea, golf courses and restaurants. The rolling hills of inland Alicante, Javea and Costa Blanca North are home to many exceptional wineries. From small family-run bodegas to modern vineyards producing award-winning wines; the region offers a unique blend of traditional and innovative winemaking. Exploring the wine routes of Costa Blanca North is a splendid journey through sun-drenched vineyards, charming villages, and rich Mediterranean flavours.

The wider Alicante region can be divided into two distinct wine regions ‘Marina Alta’ in the North and ‘El Alto Vinalopó in the South. Our local area in the north is historically known for producing high-quality white wines and sweet fortified wines, including Moscatel wines. The sea breezes and higher altitude create perfect conditions for these aromatic grapes.
Most of the wineries offer small group tours that provide a total sensory experience, learning all about the process of making the best wines in the area.

Jávea is the ideal “base camp” to explore every facet of this intriguing wine region

Here are three of our favourite wineries near Javea. If you have friends visiting or you’re just looking for something different to do at the weekend, we highly recommend visiting all three of these special wineries.

1.) Les Freses

Situated in the charming and quiet village of Jesus Pobre and close to the slopes of the Montgo, Les Freses is a family-run boutique winery and one of the gems of the area. The winery is close to the hill of Benimaqua, where the ruins of Europe’s first winery were discovered, dating back to the sixth century BC. The winery gets its name from the pre-wine making period when strawberries were the crop of the day.

One of the most highly regarded wineries in the area, located in the town of Lliber, just a 30 minute drive from Javea. Pepe Mendoza’s wines are cultivated organically, dry-farmed on terraces with centuries-old dry-stone walls. Focussing on on Giro and Monastell grapes, they produce full-bodied wines with rich plum and blackberry flavours, often with hints of herbs and spices. Casa Agrícola (the main building) also boasts an enchanting winery built in 1900, originally an old Riu-Rau of Arab origin. The winery was awarded the coveted ‘Most Sustainable Winery in Spain’ award in 2024 by The Spanish Association of Wine Cities (Acevin). The Casa Agrícola estate manor was built in the days of the raisin trade.

3.) M de Alejandria

This idylic winery works exclusively with Moscatel de Alejandría grapes to produce their award wining ice wine. This wine is sweet and elegant without being cloying, with a fruity aroma, floral notes and a slight acidity acquired from the preparation method. Perfect for pairing with desserts, especially chocolate. The vineyards are distributed across 7 terraces separted by dry stone walls, a UNESCO-protected heritage.

Owner Cristina Rodríguez Vicente likes to think of ‘M de Alejandría’ as not just a winery, but a place where people can learn about the history of the Muscat grape and its connection to the landscape and architecture of Teulada-Moraira for centuries. “These are very family-friendly experiences, designed for small groups”.

Local gastronomy: Perfect pairing with the wines of the region

Jávea has a rich local gastronomy that makes the most of top quality produce, both from the sea (fish and seafood) and from the land (fruit and vegetables). To make the most of it, the chefs have also known how to take the best of the culinary tradition of the area and the most modern preparations.
Rice dishes, stews and fish and seafood dishes are the great specialities of the area, which go perfectly with the region’s white wines. In restaurants such as Casa Grau, Tula, Embruix or La Bandideta you will enjoy an unforgettable gastronomic experience, while tasting the best wines.
