Benissa is the main town at the end of the Jalon Valley, between Jalon and Teulada/Moraira. A traditional Benissa saying is "pulpo y misa" (polp i missa) and refers to one of the gastronomic traditions of the locality: the cocido de pulpo (octopus stew), where meat is replaced by rock octopus. Benissa, like its environment combined by sea and mountain, mixes the typical seafood specialties with the rural ones, hence its extensive and varied gastronomic repertoire: cazuela de melva, "cocas al horno" or "sangre con cebolla" (sang amb ceba). One of the gastronomic riches for which Benisa is known is its sausages, one of the best in the Marina Alta. Linked to the grape and the culture of the riu rau, in Benissa you can taste two different types of wines, the muscatel and the mistela. Benissa also is home to many supermarkets, car dealerships and all the usual shops and services such as doctors, dentists, vets, hairdressers, the closest big town to the Jalon Valley and a destination for many of the local inhabitants requiring the services available there. It is also located on the AP7 providing very easy access to both Valencia and Alicante. The main fiestas that the people follow with great devotion are the patron saint festivities in honour of the Purísima Xiqueta, which are celebrated on the fourth Sunday in April and last 10 days. They include free concerts and the emotional ascent and descent of the Virgin, before and after the procession, which is attended by many “Beniseros.” Other important festivals are those of the Moors and Christians, which are celebrated in honour of Saint Peter, on the weekend closest to 29 June. In addition to these two festivities, the Feria y Porrat (Fair and Porrat) is also held in January in honour of San Antonio, which lasts three weekends, the last of which also includes a medieval fair. And finally, Benissa has many rural districts, and both they and some neighbourhoods in the town centre have their own small local festival, such as the fiestas of the San Antonio
