Frenchman’s cove in Javea, do you know it?

Among the lesser known treasures of the Mediterranean coast we find the Cala del Francés in Jávea. Although it is a rather secluded place, its charm obliges us to talk about it.

Its name comes from André Lambert, the discoverer of the cove, who came across a hidden gem in an area noted for beaches and coves accessible to everyone. For this reason, Cala del Francés enchants everyone who comes to it, and here we are going to describe what it is like and how to get there, as it can only be reached from the sea or along a semi-hidden path.

A bit of history: the origin of Cala del Francés in Jávea

As we said, the cove was discovered by the artist André Lambert, a lover of Jávea who decided to take up residence in Jávea. He gave it the nickname of “Cala del Francés” (Frenchman’s Cove), although he was actually born in Germany and had Swiss nationality.

It is located between Cala Blanca and Cabo de San Martín, in a less crowded area of the coast of Jávea. When Lambert settled there with his family, he bought a plot of land near the sea in the Portitxol area. His commitment to the area became clear with the replanting of pine trees and a construction in keeping with the architecture of the area.

In this way, the area remained undeveloped for decades and much of his work represented both the customs and landscapes of Xàbia. For all these reasons, it makes sense that the cove’s nickname continues to recall the figure of an artist of the stature of André Lambert.

Visit and get to know the Cala del Francés

One of the secrets of this treasure is how to get there. You have to go to Cala Blanca and, from there, walk along the coast to discover Cala del Francés. You can also access it from the sea; the perfect excuse to use a kayak and see the Mediterranean coast from a different point of view.

If you are going to do it on foot, you should bear in mind that footwear such as booties is recommended, as the “path” is over large stones that may be wet from the waves. For people with mobility problems or small children, this can be a problem and it is more appropriate to reach it by sea.

This place has the typical characteristics of a semi unknown cove on the Mediterranean coast. If you are looking to disconnect and escape from mass tourism, Cala del Francés is perfect for you. Don’t hesitate to visit it if you are passing through Jávea or the surrounding area.
